Tank Coatings

Storage tanks can contain a great many liquids and Jotun's Tankguard range has been formulated to protect from most instances. For protection from a  specific chemical or liquid please contact us for the best solution. For general marine tanks the three main applications and our recommendations are:

Fuel tanks - Tankguard HB is a high build epoxy coating and is used extensively in gas and oil storage tanks and pipelines.

Waste water tanks - Jotamastic 90 has exceptional corrosion resistance, is fast drying and is surface tolerant meaning that preparation does not have to be perfect. Use Ballastic Epoxy for previously painted tanks.

Drinking or potable water tanks- Tankguard DW is the only product approved for drinking water tanks and is only available in 15L tins. Please see the comments at the bottom of this page for advice on steel drinking water tanks for canal boats.

Repainting steel drinking water tanks for canal boats

We are often asked for a product suitable for steel canal boat water tanks and the only approved option is Tankguard DW. The problem is that Tankguard DW is only available in 15 litre tins (enough to coat approx. 60 m²) requires very good surface preparation, something that could prove difficult in small (by shipping standards) tanks and is expensive when compared to normal paints.

Often it appears that these tanks have been previously coated with a bitumen product or one that was applied before any strict approval was required. This paint would need to be totally removed before applying Tankguard DW. Our recommendation for most of our canal boat customers or boat owners with similar tanks would be to clean these tanks as best you can removing any loose paint and rust. Once clean and dry apply several coats of our SML Ballastic Epoxy paying particular attention to the edges and corners. Then, only use these tanks for washing up water, toilets etc and install a smaller approved plastic water tank with its own pump for drinking water.
